EP1 Digital Covers & Companion Zine
EP1 is the first release by my band, Louder Joy. All three members of the band had a similar musical upbringing in the New England hardcore and DIY scene, coming up pre-internet, when to learn more about bands, see what they looked like performing (or even to see what they looked like in general) meant going to shows and witnessing them in person and also reading zines. We’re typically cynical at our age and wanted something more than just releasing music on Spotify and Apple Music. We wanted something people could hold and read and look at any maybe understand us better. That’s where the idea for the zine came from. Sticker sheet = sweet bonus.
The art itself is rooted in pinning one extreme against another. For the treatment, I took that pretty literally, with the halftone lines on one image contrasting against the opposite of the other. The painted rectangles advance as the songs do.
The other effect of the treatment is that, the closer you look at the images, the less you’re able to discern what the image is of. Pull back, take a breath, you’ll see it.
